Visitor information

Odds in Plain Language

Slot help screens are full of words that sound precise but often leave people more confused than before. This page translates the most common ones into everyday language. You will not find numbers for specific games here; the rules screen of the game you are playing is the only reliable source for those.

Chance

Every spin of an online slot is decided by a random number generator, a piece of software that picks results without memory or mood. Each spin stands on its own. A long run without a win does not make the next spin more likely to pay, and a big win does not make the next one less likely. Machines are never "due" and never "hot".

Return to player

Return to player, usually shortened to RTP, describes how much of the money staked on a game is paid back to players as a group over a very long period, often many millions of spins. It is a long-run average, not a promise for your session. In one evening you might get back far more or far less, and that is exactly how the figure is meant to work.

Some games exist in several versions with different settings, so the same title can have a different return at different operators. Always look in the game's own info screen.

House edge

The house edge is the other side of the return figure: the share of stakes that the game is designed to keep over time. It is how the operator pays for itself. Because the edge applies to every stake, the more you put through a game, the more the edge has to work on. That is why spin speed matters, as we explain in turbo spins and session length.

Volatility

Volatility, sometimes called variance, describes how a game spreads its payouts:

  • Low volatility games tend to pay small amounts fairly often, so a balance moves gently.
  • High volatility games can go quiet for a long time and then pay more in one go.
  • Medium volatility sits somewhere in between.

Volatility does not change the house edge. It changes how bumpy the ride feels, which matters for how long a budget is likely to last.

Hit frequency and near misses

How often a game lands any win at all is a different thing from how much it returns. Many small "wins" can be smaller than the stake that produced them. Near misses, where a big symbol lands just above or below the line, feel close but mean nothing for the next spin.

Bonus features

Free spins, multipliers and pick-me rounds are part of the game's design and already included in its return figure. They make the game more varied, not more generous than its settings allow.

What this means in practice

Slots are entertainment with a cost. Set a budget, choose a game whose rhythm you enjoy and stop when the budget or your time is used up. Our Bankroll Basics hall turns that into simple routines. Play only if you are 18 or over and gambling is legal where you live.

Constants of the cabinet

Fixed points behind every game

Whatever the theme, the lights or the feature list, these stay the same.

  • Results come from a random number generator and each spin stands alone.

  • The operator keeps a share of stakes over time; that is how the games are funded.

  • No feature, time of day or betting pattern turns play into income.

  • The info screen of the version you see is the only reliable source for its settings.

  • Every gambling game on these pages is for adults aged 18 and over.

  • Turbo and autoplay change how fast a budget is used, never the odds behind each spin.
