The Reel Room Crew
Every arcade has a back room where the machines are opened up, cleaned and put back together. Ours is a shared document, a long list of reader questions and a running argument about which slot sound effect is the most annoying. We call it the reel room, and the three people who work in it are the Reel Room Crew.
We write under pen names. That keeps the focus on the articles, and it keeps our day jobs and families out of a subject that some people feel strongly about. None of us holds a professional title in finance, psychology or law, and we never pretend otherwise. What we do have is a long-standing interest in games, a habit of reading rules screens all the way to the bottom and a shared belief that play should stay light.
Quintessa: the archivist
Quintessa looks after the Arcade History hall and most of our pieces on themes and game design. She grew up near a seafront arcade, collects old cabinet manuals and cannot pass a pachinko clip without stopping to watch the balls fall. Her rule for every draft is simple: explain how the thing works before you explain why people love it.
Mabry: the feature hunter
Mabry covers bonuses, loyalty schemes, gamification and the regional slot scene across Southeast Asia. He reads terms and conditions for fun, which the rest of us find slightly worrying. When a new feature turns up on a game, Mabry is the one who works out what it actually changes and what is just extra sparkle.
Ozzie: the steady hand
Ozzie writes our Bankroll Basics pieces and the occasional article on sports-betting apps, and edits everything before it goes live. Ozzie is the one who removes exciting adjectives, checks that no sentence sounds like a promise and makes sure the 18+ and local-law reminder is in place.
How we split the work
- Questions come in. Reader emails, confusing help screens and gaps in the archive all go onto one list.
- One writer takes the lead. Whoever knows the area best drafts the piece from the game's own rules and published terms.
- Another crew member challenges it. They look for anything vague, overconfident or missing.
- Ozzie edits and checks the reminders. Then the article goes live, and corrections are welcome afterwards.
The full process, including what we refuse to write, is described in How a Review Gets Written.
What none of us will do
- Promise that a game, feature or habit will make you money.
- Make up return figures, odds or player numbers.
- Encourage anyone under 18, or anyone in a place where it is not allowed, to play.
Write to the crew
We read every message, and the best article ideas usually come from readers. Use the contact page to reach us, or read About Textic Talk for the bigger picture.
Explain how the machine works first. The reasons people love it will make far more sense afterwards.
